12 Gauge Ammo
12 gauge shotshells are versatile tools for every purpose: hunting, self-defense, law enforcement, and even military operations. The 12 gauge has a bore of about .73 inches or 18.53mm; shells for it come in a wide variety of configurations for different purposes. Standard length 2-3/4"" shells offer less firepower than "magnum" 3-inch shells, but produce lower recoil; magnum shells are generally used only for hunting. In general, 12ga. hunting loads typically fire 8-10 pellets of 00 buckshot at a muzzle velocity of around 1,325 feet per second; self-defense loads often produce around 1,200 feet per second in order to reduce recoil and overpenetration risk. Slugs, on the other hand, fire a large projectile (usually about one ounce) at a much higher velocity to extend the shotgun's reach. Some slugs use a saboted design intended for a rifled barrel only.
While not suited for self-defense or deer hunting, birdshot loads are a great choice for bird hunting or target shooting. 12 gauge shotguns are the standard for sporting clays, a sport vaguely reminiscent of golf that is played over several prepared positions with clay pigeons.
Steel birdshot loads in particular are a must have for waterfowl hunting, as environmental protection laws typically prohibit the use of lead shot in aquatic habitats.
