17 HMR Ammo

17 HMR ammo is primarily used today by hunters for varmint control. The round was developed by Hornady and released in 2002, .17 HMR (Hornady Magnum Rimfire) is best known for its high velocity and excellent performance against small game. Based on a necked down .22 WMR casing, it is a flat-shooting cartridge and fires aerodynamic spitzer point (typically polymer-tipped) bullets for enhanced long range performance.

.17 HMR loads feature an extremely light (17 or 20 grains) bullet. This makes muzzle velocities of up to 2,550 feet per second possible in a compact, low-recoil platform. Hollow point bullets fired at these velocities fragment reliably in squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs, and other small critters for better terminal effect.

The .17 HMR has caught on with many shooters. As a result, good ammo in this caliber is available not only from Hornady, but also from CCI, Winchester, Remington, and Federal as well. You'll find our entire in-stock line-up for sale right here on this page.

If you don’t know your ammo terminology, then the phrase “CCI 17 HMR 17gr VNT” would be enough to make your head spin. But if you do know your ammo, you will recognize that combination of initials and number 17s as one of the finest solutions for varmint hunting.

This 17 HMR round features the middleweight bullet for its caliber, yet its powerful propellant charge gives its 17 grain bullet a 100 fps faster muzzle velocity than average. That added speed in conjunction with the VNT’s ballistically efficient polymer tip and rotationally stable copper jacket grants it a lofty .125 ballistic coefficient – and accordingly flat trajectory.

The VNT is deadly to small game. The moment it makes contact its polymer tip drives into its nose cavity, forcing the wafer-thin jacket to burst apart into smithereens. Such terminal performance absolutely vanquishes varmints, flattens foxes, and discombobulates bobcats.

CCI pairs a sensitive primer with a precision drawn and tapered brass case to assist with seamless functionality. CCI does advise checking with a semi-automatic firearm’s manufacturer before running their high velocity 17 HMR ammo through it.

Pinpoint accuracy. Deadly terminal ballistics. Both are available in a tiny package when you choose Hornady Varmint Express 17 HMR for your varmint dispatching needs!

This cartridge is loaded with Hornady’s smallest eXtreme Terminal Performance jacketed hollow point projectile. The 20 grain bullet tears out of a 24” barrel at a rate of 2,375 fps. The lightweight XTP may lack very much momentum, but it makes up for that shortcoming with its rotationally stable concentric jacket and balanced lead core, as well as its sleek overall jacket profile. The bullet’s trajectory is so flat that this ammo extends the 17 HMR’s effective range all the way out to 200 yards! And thanks to the XTP’s nose cavity and tapered jacket’s thin surrounding rim, the bullet needs comparably little kinetic energy to undergo wide terminal expansion.

Hornady’s highest-quality brass cases provide smooth feeding and extraction in all firearms, and their carefully formulated propellant and priming compound work hand in hand to prevent any surprises while you’re out in the field. Varmints hate this ammo, which is why you’re going to love it!

This 17 HMR cartridge by Hornady will turn you into the woodchuck terminator that you’ve always aspired to become. Its select brass casing’s geometry has match grade uniformity, and its sensitive primer and powerful propellant guarantee a perfect shot with every pull of the trigger. This round is especially potent thanks to its projectile -- a 17 grain V-MAX.

The V-MAX starts with its lead core, which is swaged to permit the precise formation of a cylindrical hollow within it. Perched atop the rim of the V-MAX’s jacket is a polymer tip, the tail of which reaches down into the core’s cavity without touching its base. Upon impact the tip builds up tremendous energy before kissing the bottom of the hollow, causing instantaneous and explosive fragmentation that no varmint would be happy to have take place between its ribs. The V-MAX’s consistent meplat, concentric jacket, and ballistically efficient profile all grant it the heightened accuracy requisite for seeking out such small targets as well.
