The U.S. Army originally developed the .308 Winchester to take the place of their 30-06. Since then, .308 Win has become one of the most popular cartridges in the world. Indeed, that is the typical fate for any round used by our Army – it’s not only a hefty endorsement for it to receive, but tons of people are going to become very familiar with it as the result.

The .308 bullet’s exceptional accuracy, ability to keep a barrel in good condition for a very long time, and compatibility with a great variety of commercial propellants have made it extremely popular with handloaders. As such you’ll find no lack of .308 bullets for reloading to choose from. If you’d like to make something that approximates the performance of the Army’s M852 match competition round, you’ll be happy to find that .30 caliber 168 grain HPBT bullets are in healthy supply.

If you’re after varmints, a lightweight 110 grain bullet ought to serve up the flat trajectory you need to pick off small and skittish critters. Bullets weighing 150, 165, and 170 grains are most often favored for hunting medium-sized game including whitetail, although heavyweight 180 and 190 grain bullets are not unheard of. Just keep your chamber pressure under SAAMI’s max 62,000 psi and you should have things under control!

These bullets’ packaging has Federal’s branding on it, but they were in fact made at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. (Federal often offers the U.S. government’s primary small arms ammo supplier’s products for sale.) This 130 grain bullet is an open tip match, which is engineered to give any rifle surgical accuracy.

The very small opening in this bullet’s nose isn’t designed to trigger terminal expansion. That’s the hole the bullet’s lead core was poured in through, permitting it to harden in place for heightened rotational stability. Such balance alongside the OTM’s concentric copper jacket and streamlined overall profile makes it a favorite among snipers and competitive shooters when they want to lower their shot group’s median radius as close to zero as possible.

Please take care that bullets with pointed tips are not suitable for lever-action rifles.
