223 (5.56) Ammo
.223 Remington ammunition and 5.56x45 NATO are closely related and sometimes interchangeable cartridges depending on the firearm they are to be used with. Manufacturers typically offer guidance on this point. In general, the 5.56 NATO ammunition the military uses and is for sale to the civilian market operates at higher pressures than .223 Remington ammo. Most, but not all, AR-15s are chambered for 5.56 NATO and can fire both types of ammo.
Many loads in both calibers follow the M193 or M855 standard, both of which are military specifications. M193 ammo typically fires a 55 grain full metal jacket bullet at 3,240 feet per second, while M855 ammo fires a heavier 62 grain FMJ bullet at about 3,100 feet per second. These common standards are very helpful when sighting in your optics and you'll find both cartridges in-stock and available in cheap bulk packs here at Widener's
Certain specialized loads deviate from these common standards. Competition grade .223/5.56 ammo fires a heavier bullet (most commonly a Sierra MatchKing) in the 77 grain range to provide better stability and more predictable trajectories; varmint loads, on the other hand, fire light 30-40 grain bullets at very high velocities to produce lethal fragmentation against pest animals.
One of the most sought after range loads for this caliber is Lake City ammunition, which is produced by Federal Premium Ammunition at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, Missouri. LCAAP production is typically excess from government contracts and is popular due to its military origins and high quality.

Hornady Frontier 5.56x45mm 75 Grain BTHP Match – 500 Rounds

They boast, rightly, that a Frontier round is the one to reach for whether you would spend your afternoon plinking, target shooting, and training for law enforcement. It’s also in no way inadequate (and in fact excellent for) hunting and self-defense as well. Combined with its reasonable price, this one-size-fits-all brand is great for shooters who appreciate the opportunity to familiarize themselves with one cartridge’s performance as intimately as they can.
This 5.56x45mm cartridge features a 75 grain projectile. Its boat tail design greatly increases its ballistic coefficient to raise its accuracy, flatten its trajectory, and improve its performance in windy environments. Because the bullet is also a hollow point, it will expand to create a deep and wide wound channel in soft targets.
Frontier ammunition further offers reloadable brass casings and military grade Boxer primers and propellant. Hornady’s meticulous manufacturing process sees to it that each and every Frontier round is loaded to consistent specifications, and their quality assurance protocol ensures that they’re all flawless before exiting their factory’s doors.Customer Reviews

Hot and accurate with minor quality issues...
-
Tried this out in my 26", 8 twist, 223 Wylde bolt gun and was surprised to get .55-.65" groups. Even more amazed the velocity was 2916 fps with a 34 ES. This has to be at the hot end of the load data so be sure you have a rifle that can take it. Much cheaper, faster, and just as accurate as Magtech 77gr. Only negative was several rounds had some good dents in the shoulder area, so watch out for quality issues.

This box of ammo cures all that ails you! It contains 30 rounds neatly arranged on three stripper clips, and it even comes with a spoon. Neato!
These are true M193 spec military-grade 5.56 cartridges, just like you’d get issued for target practice if you were a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. The 55 grain projectile achieves a muzzle velocity of 3,180 fps, and has the 0.250 G1 ballistic coefficient requisite to ensure supersonic velocity out until approximately 710 yards. Aim to 100 yards and the trajectory shouldn’t have to rise higher than 0.5” above the bore line.
Winchester’s military-grade brass cases aren’t polished after they’re strengthened via annealing (a heat-treatment process). They are brand new and reloadable – they just aren’t as shiny as commercial-grade cases. Noncorrosive, American-made and super dependable! -
Winchester 5.56x45 62 Grain FMJ M855 – 420 Rounds in Ammo Can
$349.85Manufacturer Winchester Condition New Bullet Weight 62 Grain Bullet Type Penetrator Use Type plinking at the range Casing Type Brass Quantity 420 Ammo Caliber 5.56x45mm Manufacturer SKU WM855420CS Primer Type Boxer Magnetic Yes UPC Barcode 020892229242 Cost Per Round 83.3¢ per round Ready for action! This ammo can contains 420 rounds of 5.56x45, loaded on stripper clips and accompanied by a handy steel spoon. Whether you want to pour the contents of this can into unsuspecting range targets or save them indefinitely, you can’t go wrong with Winchester’s military-grade 5.56x45.
This isn’t M193 ammo with 55 grain nonmagnetic FMJ projectiles. It is M855 ammo, with 62 grain magnetic FMJ projectiles. Each green-tipped bullet sports a seven-grain steel cone beneath the tip of its jacket, which promotes surer penetration of barriers including 0.125” thick steel plating at close to medium range. The M855 bullet’s relatively greater heft gives it superior velocities a few hundred yards out – a 1:7 barrel twist is adequate for this ammo, but you’ll observe its best accuracy with a 1:8 or 1:9 twist.
This Winchester 5.56x45 ammo is brand new production, not something that has been sitting around at an Army base for eons. As such it has responsive non-corrosive primers and newly minted brass cases. Don’t worry about the gray coloration around the cases’ mouths and necks – that’s only cosmetic, and the result of the annealing treatment which helps brass expand and contract more efficiently. -

high quality

No failures after the first thousand rounds. Very clean when I compare it to alternates in same price range. Great grouping at 100 yards but cannot get less than 4 " groups at 200 yards with a Leupold rifleman scope and AR 15s in a bench vice, but I think this is more operator and scope related. I feel it is a great target round for the price and highly recommend it. JHB

Federal American Eagle 223 Rem 62 Grain FMJ-BT – 20 Rounds
$17.45Manufacturer Federal Condition New Bullet Weight 62 Grain Bullet Type Full Metal Jacket Boat Tail (FMJ-BT) Use Type plinking at the range Casing Type Brass Quantity 20 Ammo Caliber 223 Remington Manufacturer SKU AE223N Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 029465093488 Cost Per Round 87.3¢ per round These .223 Remington rounds from Federal's American Eagle line represent some of the highest quality available before stepping into the premium price pool. Each cartridge is assembled using a reloadable brass casing fitted with a non-corrosive Boxer primer and complimented by primer pocket sealant which guards against moisture.
The rounds are topped by 62 grain full metal jacket projectiles with boat tails (FMJ-BT) which reduce in-flight drag for increased range and precision. 62 grains is a common weight for the caliber, especially in its 5.56mm NATO configuration, and is amply supported by endless amounts of ballistic software, sight sets, and proven zeroing methods. In addition, each casing is crimped to each bullets' toothed cannelure in order to prevent projectile setback which can spoil accuracy at best and induce a misfire or malfunction at worst.

Their BLACK series 5.56x45 ammunition makes the perfect companion during any range day, as it’s loaded with the high-quality components and tight specs any rifle needs in order to do its best work.
Hornady loads this ammo so you can have the same recoil and trajectory that the U.S. Army’s M855 cartridge would have provided – without the magnetic bullet. Cut Hornady’s 62 grain FMJ in half and you’ll find a lead core, copper alloy, and no steel penetrator insert. The non-expanding FMJ’s mid-jacket cannelure effectively prevents setback in the magazine that could have interrupted feeding or thrown off seating depth.
BLACK ammo is loaded with reloadable brass cases. Its non-corrosive Boxer primers are sealed for added longevity in storage, and its propellant is consistently loaded to deliver a 3,060 fps muzzle velocity (20” test barrel), just like the M855. -

It showcases the Nebraskan master’s HP Match, which is basically 55 grains of nothing but accuracy-enhancing features.
The HP Match’s swaged lead core is highly uniform, and doesn’t possess air pockets that could impact its balance. Its AMP jacket is drawn with virtually zero runout or variations in its wall thickness. The HP Match is also extremely sleek, from its narrow meplat to its secant ogive geometry to its sloping boat tail.
This round’s HP Match bursts out of a 24” barrel at a velocity of 3,240 fps. So well-balanced and streamlined a bullet exhibits a G1 BC of 0.254, and can be counted on to remain supersonic beyond 700 yards. Whether you’re shooting targets or varmints, so flat a trajectory is certain to come in very handy.

Hornady Frontier 5.56x45 75 Grain BTHP Match – 20 Rounds
$19.85Manufacturer Hornady Condition New Bullet Weight 75 Grain Bullet Type Hollow-Point Boat Tail (HP-BT) Use Type match or precision shooting, plinking at the range Casing Type Brass Quantity 20 Ammo Caliber 5.56x45mm Manufacturer SKU FR320 Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 090255711615 Cost Per Round 99.3¢ per round This 5.56x45 cartridge is from Hornady’s Frontier line of ammunition, and was manufactured at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant to provide cost-effective but still admirable performance out of any rifle you could chamber it in. Its 75 grain projectile provides match grade accuracy thanks in large part to its boat tail design, which reduces the amount of turbulence it leaves in its wake during flight to flatten its trajectory and permit it to retain a greater part of its velocity after having traveled great distances. This bullet further sports a narrow hollow point meplat to improve its resistance to wind deflection.
Given its place of manufacture, this round features military grade components to complement its bullet’s high level performance. Its factory fresh brass casing is very durable with an annealed neck and shoulder, and able to withstand being reloaded multiple times. Its Boxer primer is extremely sensitive and non-corrosive, and its powder burns without producing harmful residues as well. -

’ If you’ve got an AR or any other kind of 5.56/223 Rem rifle, this is the ammo you need for all kinds of casual varminting. The 55 grain soft point bullet delivers consistent accuracy, and also reaches 200 yards with 700 ft lbs of varmint-flipping kinetic energy. The bullet’s bare lead tip and thin copper jacket enable it to undergo fast, expansion. Terminal ballistics like that annihilates coyote and woodchucks no sweat, but often leads to insufficiently deep penetration for medium game.

For a full day of target shooting, a few boxes of these targets will do the trick.
The full metal jacket bullet is one of the most popular projectiles for high-volume target practice. Because the bullet is wrapped in metal, the lead core does not leave a fouling residue in the barrel. Through hundreds of shots, you’ll have much better accuracy, helping you compete or train at the highest level.

Hornady Frontier 223 Rem 68 Grain BTHP Match – 20 Rounds
$19.85Manufacturer Hornady Condition New Bullet Weight 68 Grain Bullet Type Hollow-Point Boat Tail (HP-BT) Use Type match or precision shooting, plinking at the range, varmint hunting Casing Type Brass Quantity 20 Ammo Caliber 223 Remington Manufacturer SKU FR160 Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 090255711387 Cost Per Round 99.3¢ per round The American frontier is gone, but Hornady Frontier keeps going strong! This is the 223 Rem ammo you want to chamber when accuracy is key – grouping tight shots through paper, or landing a single bullet clean between a gopher’s peepers.
Hornady utilizes the industry’s most advanced loading equipment and protocol when they piece together a Frontier load. This American-made ammo’s brass cases are military-grade, and you can see by their annealing that they’re poised to reload several times. This ammo’s primers are also military-grade, which promotes consistent ballistics along with its uniform propellant charges and bullet weights.
Each bullet is Hornady’s accurate BTHP Match. It features its manufacturer’s Advanced Manufacturing Process jacket and a form-fitted swaged lead core, both of which enhance in-flight stability to ensure the meplat is always pointed at its target. The BTHP Match’s secant ogive profile, boat tail and narrow hollow point meplat all decrease in-flight drag to flatten trajectory. Zero in at 200 yards and you can expect only 7.5” of bullet drop at 300!
The BTHP Match’s hollow point doesn’t affect terminal ballistics by creating expansion. The impact of a 68 grain bullet alone ought to take care of most varmint hunting and self-defense applications, though.Customer Reviews

After spending a couple of hours looking for a decent price on 68 grain .223 BTHP ammo that was in stock, I finally found Widener's site, and they actually had it in stock. This ammo is pricy everywhere, but Widener's had it available for about a nickel per round below the next best price. We’ve got a bunch of it in our warehouse, as a matter of fact, and it’s ready for action whether you’ve got long-distance shooting, varmint detail or home defense in your plans!
This 5.56x45 cartridge is designed to turn any AR-15 into a capable sniper rifle. It’s furnished with a heavyweight 68 grain bullet. It’ll stabilize best out of a rifle with a 1:8 barrel twist, but a little faster or slower twist will be okay as well. As a boat tail hollow point this bullet features a ballistically efficient profile and balanced, uniformly distributed lead core. It won’t expand inside of its target, but it’s certain to get there courtesy of its match grade accuracy.
Frontier ammo is non-corrosive, nonmagnetic, and made in America. This ammo’s military-grade brass cases are consistently drawn and chambered to help them reliably weave in and out of a chamber, and you can rest assured they’re good for handloading. -

Each one of these boxes holds 20 fantastic cartridges that are extremely reliable in autoloading rifles. They have 77-grain ammunition that will cycle smoothly through the chamber and deliver the speed, accuracy, and performance you want at the target.
These rounds have OTM bullets, which stands for “Open Tip Match.” While this type of bullet is similar in design to a jacketed hollow point, they are not the same thing. OTM bullets have a slightly different build that is ideal for long range and precision target shooting and training. They deliver different terminal ballistics and unique flight patterns and behavior compared to a typical jacketed hollow point.
Many gun owners choose to load military-grade ammo like these cartridges. They are known for being more reliable, both in the feeding cycle and downrange, with tighter grouping and straighter trajectories.

Sierra Prairie Enemy 223 Rem 55 Grain BlitzKing – 200 Rounds
$229.85Manufacturer Sierra Bullets Condition New Bullet Weight 55 Grain Bullet Type Polymer Tipped Use Type varmint hunting Casing Type Nickel-Plated Brass Quantity 200 Ammo Caliber 223 Remington Manufacturer SKU A1455--09 Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 604544659290 Cost Per Round $1.15 per round You are the mighty AR-15 varmint hunter. Groundhogs and prairie dogs want to avoid you, but everyone else wants to be you. A hero like you would never stoop so low as to fire inferior ammo during his all-important mission. That’s why you select Sierra Prairie Enemy.
This 223 Rem cartridge features its manufacturer’s own 55 grain BlitzKing. Here you have a balanced, streamlined bullet which puts its 3,215 fps muzzle velocity to full use so it can boast a high G7 ballistic coefficient of 0.127. Such a bullet needn’t rise even five inches on its way to a 300 yard target, and it still packs over 300 ft lbs of killing energy at 500 yards!
This boat tail bullet’s polymer tip doesn’t just center and streamline its meplat, however. That acetyl resin spear rams inward as it penetrates a varmint’s flesh to commence absolute disruption of its thin copper jacket. The BlitzKrieg thus manages to nearly instantly dump all of its energy within its waiting target – a truly commanding kill.
Sierra loads their Prairie Enemy ammo with the same attention to detail they’d engage for any of their match rounds. Each round’s primer, propellant charge, and brass case are standardized to promote reliable ballistic performance.Customer Reviews

But once it enters your crosshairs, it’s due to find out very shortly. If you’d like one of the better 223 Rem solutions to varmint-related problems, then Nosler Varmageddon series ammunition will see you there.
This cartridge is loaded with Nosler’s own 55 grain flat base tipped bullet. Its 3,100 fps muzzle velocity and respectable 0.260 G1 ballistic coefficient translate to an impressively flat trajectory which still carries over 250 ft lbs of energy at 500 yards – a cannon ball, as far as any burrowing critter is concerned.
The FB tipped bullet’s flat base provides a perfectly circular surface for propellant gasses to exert their energy against, which in turn provides bench-rest accuracy. On impact the bullet’s polymer tip pushes inward to violently force apart its copper-alloy jacket and lead-alloy core, so you can count on calamitous terminal expansion to make instant work of your little quarry.
Nosler loads fine ammunition in Bend, OR. Even a cursory inspection of their ammo’s premium brass cases, sensitive Boxer primers and uniform bullets should assure you that you got just the right stuff for precision varmint whacking. -
Hornady Superformance Match 223 Rem 75 Grain HPBT – 20 Rounds
$25.85Manufacturer Hornady Condition New Bullet Weight 75 Grain Bullet Type Hollow-Point Boat Tail (HP-BT) Use Type match or precision shooting, plinking at the range, varmint hunting Casing Type Brass Quantity 20 Ammo Caliber 223 Remington Manufacturer SKU 80264 Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 090255802641 Cost Per Round $1.29 per round You’re not messing around. You’re going to prove that “effective range” is merely a concept by covering insane distances with your 223 Rem rifle – and Hornady Superformance is precisely the 223 Rem ammo you need to do it!
This cartridge is loaded with a big boy 75 grain projectile. That extra mass equals greater inertia, ergo higher resistance to wind deflection hundreds of yards downrange. As a hollow point boat tail, the bullet possesses the form-fitted lead core it needs to exhibit formidable rotational stability and the tapered base that helps to conserve momentum.
Whereas your run of the mill 223 round’s 55gr FMJ achieves a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.243, this round’s tack driver of a 75gr HPBT has a G1 BC of 0.395. In other words, its trajectory will peak at about 5.23” before it reaches a 300-yard bullseye (assuming your rifle has a 24” barrel, which is the test barrel length Hornady used to record this round’s 2,930 fps muzzle velocity, and your sights are set 1.5” high).
Hornady’s Superformance Match series ammo achieves a muzzle velocity that’s about 200 fps higher – without producing more unwanted recoil, muzzle blast, fouling or chamber pressure in the process. This ammo hails from Nebraska, where Hornady loaded it with their highest-quality reloadable brass cases and primers.
Please note: Despite its appearance, the HPBT will not deliver terminal expansion. It is solely designed for accuracy. -

Each round utilizes a 75-grain hollow point boat tail (HPBT) projectile which exhibits superb accuracy due to its measured internal balance, consistent outer dimensions, and aerodynamic shape. In addition, a toothed cannelure keeps the heavyweight bullet firmly seated within its crimp so that recoil vibrations don't upset final shot placement.
The reloadable brass casing of each cartridge is filled with a potent charge with powder, like all Superformance rounds, which produces breathtaking muzzle velocity for flatter shooting out to greater distances. This propellant accepts a spark from a non-corrosive Boxer primer which is accompanied by sealant that prevents moisture from ruining its ignition quality. Hornady's projectiles and finished ammo are supported by expertise that dates back all the way to 1949.

Winchester Match 223 Rem 69 Grain HPBT MatchKing – 20 Rounds
$26.85Manufacturer Winchester Condition New Bullet Weight 69 Grain Bullet Type Hollow-Point Boat Tail (HP-BT) Use Type match or precision shooting, plinking at the range Casing Type Brass Quantity 20 Ammo Caliber 223 Remington Manufacturer SKU S223M2 Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 020892220157 Cost Per Round $1.34 per round Do you want to prove that you have the most accurate 223 Rem rifle on the planet? Then you’re going to need the right ammunition to make your case. Winchester’s Match series ammo is engineered to deliver the outstanding precision you need to start making people wonder whether you’re cheating physics.
This cartridge’s hollow point boat tail bullet is made by Sierra. It is the MatchKing, aka the bullet that has won more competitive target shooting events than all other manufacturers’ bullets combined.
The MatchKing begins as a thin copper jacket, which doesn’t deviate in concentricity by any more or less than 0.0003”. The opening in the MatchKing’s tip exists because the bullet’s lead was poured into place while it was molten, subsequently hardening to create an extremely uniform and voidless core. (The MatchKing’s nose cavity is not designed to initiate terminal expansion; it is not a hunting or self-defense bullet, and exhibits comparable terminal ballistics to an FMJ.) The MatchKing’s boat tail serves to minimize the bullet’s in-flight drag and increase its ballistic coefficient.
And this round’s ballistic coefficient is indeed high for a 223 Rem: G1 0.302, G1 0.152. The 69 grain HPBT should stay supersonic until approximately 780 yards, and its trajectory should rise by approximately 3.15” before it plows into a 200-yard bullseye. (Winchester recommends firing this match grade 223 ammunition through a 1:7” to 1:9” barrel for optimal accuracy.)Customer Reviews

Hornady Critical Defense 223 Rem 73 Grain FTX – 20 Rounds
$26.85Manufacturer Hornady Condition New Bullet Weight 73 Grain Bullet Type Flex-Tip-Technology (FTX) Use Type home defense Casing Type Nickel-Plated Brass Quantity 20 Ammo Caliber 223 Remington Manufacturer SKU 80260 Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 090255802603 Cost Per Round $1.34 per round This 223 Rem cartridge from Hornady’s Critical Defense line of ammunition features a 73 grain FTX projectile. The heavy FTX is able to penetrate deeply, and is prevented from shedding very much of its weight during penetration by its InterLock ring. The FTX’s secant ogive profile grants it the ballistic coefficient needed for accuracy at longer ranges. The FTX’s Flex Tip reliably initiates powerful expansion even at lower velocities, and additionally serves to protect the hollow point from clogging with fabric and other media.
A Critical Defense cartridge’s factory fresh brass casing is plated with nickel, which enhances its ability to cycle seamlessly through a semi-automatic weapon and safeguards it against corrosion caused by atmospheric moisture. If you ever have to engage a threat in the nighttime, you’ll appreciate how this round’s low-flash propellant emits little light when ignited, protecting your vision so you can continue firing accurately. -
Sierra Prairie Enemy 223 Rem 55 Grain BlitzKing – 20 Rounds
$26.85Manufacturer Sierra Bullets Condition New Bullet Weight 55 Grain Bullet Type Polymer Tipped Use Type varmint hunting Casing Type Brass Quantity 20 Ammo Caliber 223 Remington Manufacturer SKU A1455--09 Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 604544658958 Cost Per Round $1.34 per round Varmints may be troublesome – but they’re not stupid. If you shoot one with an inferior bullet he’s going to use his dying breaths to make fun of you. Hunt varmints with extreme accuracy and commanding terminal performance with Sierra’s Prairie Enemy ammo instead!
This 223 Rem round delivers the awesome accuracy of Sierra’s BlitzKing. It is a streamlined bullet with a sloping boat tail base and piercing polymer tip, able to shrug off drag as it retains well over half of its starting velocity at the 400 yard mark. When its tip connects with a varmit, the BlitzKing’s thin-walled jacket instantly ruptures outward to overwhelm that target with disastrous fragmentation! Picture the accuracy of a MatchKing with the terminal effect of a firecracker, and you have a good grasp on what the BlitzKing has to offer.
Sierra carefully seats their varmint buster in a freshly minted brass case. The case’s uniform wall thickness and strong brass construction both lend themselves to intensely reliable performance. This round’s non-corrosive primer and clean burning propellant create a steady chamber pressure while reducing internal fouling. -
Black Hills 5.56x45 77 Grain OTM – 500 Rounds

It’s no coincidence that the family-owned South Dakota company also produces some of the finest long-range target ammunition the civilian market has to offer. Order yourself some today and start shooting faraway targets soon!
This cartridge gives you accuracy like only a 77 grain open tip match bullet can. The huge chunk of lead and copper has a lower muzzle velocity – 2,750 fps out of Black Hills’ own 20” test barrel – but also a trajectory that’s less susceptible to wind deflection. The OTM’s form-fitted core was created by injecting the thin copper jacket with molten lead. The hollow point gave access to that lead, but it does not give the OTM the ability to deliver terminal expansion.
Black Hills loads this ammo with match primers, match brass, and standardized charges of proprietary propellant blend. Despite what the discoloration around their shoulders might suggest, this ammo’s cases aren’t previously fired. They’re a great choice for handloading – might as well stock up on component bullets while you’re at it!Customer Reviews

In general, Superformance loads utilize unique propellant blends to achieve muzzle velocities that are well beyond the norm; that's why these rounds launch 75-grain BTHP projectiles at 2,910 feet-per-second from a 20-inch barrel, lending them amazing range capability for match use or long-range shooting in general.
The powder is contained within a reloadable brass casing which has a small amount of moisture-sealant in its primer pocket along with a Boxer primer; this arrangement guarantees reliable ignition under any conditions. The 75-grain BTHP at the top of the cartridge has a boat tail rear, tapered ogive, and tiny hollow tip for drag resistance which contributes to smaller groups. The bullet is built by feeding lead through the bullet's hollow point in order to build a dense core free of distortion while leaving the copper AMP jacket's pristine dimensions untouched.

Remington Premier Match 223 Rem 77 Grain HPBT MatchKing – 20 Rounds

Then you’d better fire ammunition that was made for the job! Remington loads this 223 Rem cartridge with Sierra’s 77 grain MatchKing so you can squeeze the best accuracy out of your rifle yet!
The MatchKing is an extremely high-quality hollow point boat tail projectile. Unlike a pistol cartridge’s JHP, the BTHP’s nose cavity is not meant to deliver terminal expansion inside game. Instead it allowed Sierra to pour liquid lead into the MatchKing’s thin and concentric jacket, thus creating a uniform and flawless core. Together the MatchKing’s ballistic jacket profile and boat tail both minimize drag to the greatest extent possible. Its exceptionally heavy 77 grain weight also helps the MatchKing to retain momentum which prevents gentle breezes from blowing it very far off of its intended trajectory.
Remington’s highest-quality brass case and match primer tie the whole package together. So long as you’re using the recommended 1:6", 1:7" or 1:8" rate of twist for a 77 grain projectile, you can expect this ammo’s flat trajectories to retain supersonic velocity well past the 800-yard line! -

Do you want to achieve such dizzying heights of marksmanship that the other guys at the range will set down their rifles in disgust? Who doesn’t? And now you can, thanks to the power of Barnes Precision Match!
This cartridge’s bullet tips the scales at 69 grains. That’s heavy in the 5.56 world, which benefits performance through decreased sensitivity to cross and vertical winds. The bullet itself is Barnes’ Match Burner – an open tip match boat tail that’s solely designed for tack-driving accuracy. Don’t expect terminal expansion out of the Match Burner. Do expect phenomenal accuracy courtesy of its perfect weight distribution and exceptionally sleek profile. You’re looking at a 0.330 G1 BC 5.56 projectile!
Barnes of Utah loads their premium competition bullet in a match grade brass shell, complete with a match Boxer primer and propellant that’s formulated to burn clean and measured to supply a consistent 2,900 fps muzzle velocity. Order the whole case and get cracking! -
Black Hills 5.56x45 77 Grain OTM – 50 Rounds
$74.75Manufacturer Black Hills Ammunition Condition New Bullet Weight 77 Grain Bullet Type Open Tip Match Use Type match or precision shooting, plinking at the range Casing Type Brass Quantity 50 Ammo Caliber 5.56x45mm Manufacturer SKU D556N9 Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 612710126408 Cost Per Round $1.50 per round You’ve got two things on your mind: precision, and your 5.56x45mm rifle. That means you only need one kind of ammunition: this 77 grain OTM ammo by Black Hills of South Dakota.
Let’s get one thing straight: the open tip match may look like it’s designed for terminal expansion, but it really isn’t. If you’re looking for hunting or home defense ammo, then your journey continues. The OTM’s open tip has already served its only purpose, which was to allow its manufacturer to inject liquid lead into its thin and concentric copper jacket. The voidless core that formed is the driving force behind the OTM’s excellent rotational stability and resultant high accuracy.
This round’s bullet is relatively heavy, which helps reduce its reaction to the cross and vertical winds awaiting at a long-distance target range. A 1:8” rate of twist barrel or faster is the ticket. Black Hills loads these fine rounds with match grade components, as well as brand new reloadable brass cases.Customer Reviews

THE SDM Ammo for taking out the trash
-
This is the MK262 MOD 1 ammo used by Uncle Sam's DM's for use in 1:8" twist or faster barrels, with 556 NATO or 223 Wylde chambers. I tested a single 5-shot group from a bipod at 600yds and the elevation was a tick over 1/2MOA from a sample rifle used to train soldiers at Ft Benning.. Close enough for gov't work.

You get what you pay for.

Three five shot groups, each under .750 inches at 100 yards. Best ever from my Colt LE 6920. Let the barrel cool between groups.

Hornady Varmint Express 223 Rem 55 Grain V-MAX – 200 Rounds
$299.85Manufacturer Hornady Condition New Bullet Weight 55 Grain Bullet Type V-MAX Use Type plinking at the range, varmint hunting Casing Type Brass Quantity 200 Ammo Caliber 223 Remington Manufacturer SKU 8327 Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 10090255383277 Cost Per Round $1.50 per round Turn your AR-15, Mini-14, or other .223 Rem/5.56 NATO rifle into a fearsome varmint exterminator with this .223 Remington ammo from Hornady's Varmint Express series. These cartridges are loaded with V-MAX hollow point bullets with an aerodynamic polymer tip. V-MAX projectiles are designed to fragment rapidly to exterminate groundhogs, nutria, coyotes, and other pest animals.
Each cartridge in this bulk priced case of 200 fires a 55-grain bullet at a muzzle velocity of 3,240 feet per second. This results in trajectories similar to M193 mil-spec ball; for a varmint load, this ammo fires a relatively heavy bullet suitable for larger targets. The ballistic similarities between this ammo and common range loads makes for easy transitions between target shooting and hunting applications.
Hornady ammunition is produced in Grand Island, Nebraska using reloadable brass and non-corrosive primers. Originally founded in the 1940s as a manufacturer of high-end bullets, Hornady branched out into loaded ammo in the 1980s and offers products for defense, hunting, and competition use.

Barnes Precision Match 223 Rem 77 Grain OTM BT – 20 Rounds
$30.00Manufacturer Barnes Condition New Bullet Weight 77 Grain Bullet Type Open Tip Match Use Type match or precision shooting, plinking at the range Casing Type Brass Quantity 20 Ammo Caliber 223 Remington Manufacturer SKU 32018 Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 716876223770 Cost Per Round $1.50 per round Barnes Precision Match ammunition is here to treat you to some of the best accuracy you’ve ever witnessed! This 223 Rem cartridge features the Match Burner – a 77 grain open tip match boat tail projectile that is designed for competitive shooting events!
First things first: an OTM bullet is not intended for hunting or home defense, simply because its hollow point nose cavity isn’t engineered for terminal expansion. The OTM’s meplat has a narrow aperture because liquid lead was poured through it – hence the bullet’s voidless, balanced, and rearward-situated core. The bullet’s narrow tip, tapered tail, and sleek, thin jacket are all in the service of minimizing drag, increasing downrange momentum, and enhancing precision. Its massive 77 grain weight gives the bullet greater resistance to wind drift as well (Barnes recommends a barrel twist of 1:8” or faster for this ammo).
This round has a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.349. Many variables will determine exactly which trajectory the bullet follows, but you can realistically expect around -9.57” drop at 300 yards when you set your rifle’s 1.5” high sights on a 200-yard zero.
Barnes loads this ammo in Utah with match primers, fastidiously measured propellant charges, and new brass cases that belong at a reloading press once they have been emancipated from their bullets. -
