Federal Ammo
Federal: Premium Ammunition
The Federal Premium lineup of shotshells and cartridges may be the industry’s most diverse. Whether you’re a waterfowler, big-game hunter, weekend clay buster, carry for self-defense or addicted to long-range, the company has a load tailored for you.
Federal is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of sporting ammunition today. Shooters know its products are reliable and perform—facts that have allowed the company to thrive for nearly 100 years. The longevity and reputation seemed far from certain in the beginning, though.
There’s no denying the company was founded, and remains headquartered, in Anoka, MN, although opinions differ as to the people—or person—and precise date that should be cited. Federal Cartridge and Machine Company was established on Sept. 15, 1916, Federal Cartridge Company came in 1918 and Federal Cartridge Corporation followed in 1922.
Federal Ammunition History
Brothers Louis and Harry Sherman, who both had experience working in the ammo industry, were behind the initial 1916 effort. Their intent was to produce shotshells and bicycles. The owners hoped to land a lucrative military ammo contract during World War I, but two-wheelers remained on the schedule—a distraction that may have contributed to the company’s lack of success.
The first shotshell came off the assembly line in January 1917, but it did little to aid the fledgling business. Reorganization under the Federal Cartridge Company name came the next year. The Sherman brothers abandoned most of the management duties to the staff shortly thereafter and bankruptcy followed in 1920.
Rebirth Of Greatness
A group of local investors purchased the machinery and plant in 1922 and named the company Federal Cartridge Corporation. Charles L. Horn, a law degree-holding manager who had worked at American Ball and Shot in Minneapolis, was hired to resurrect the business. The company’s official history labels it a “refounding,” although that’s gross understatement considering Horn’s vision and ability to make it a reality.
The bicycle scheme was abandoned. Shotshell manufacturing was the sole focus, although part of Horn’s success was an ability to pedal the company’s wares in unusual places. In 1923 he built a distribution system that included grocery stores, barber shops and gas stations—an approach forced partly because the larger manufacturers had exclusive contracts with traditional retailers.
Sales were strong and Horn knew shotshells weren’t the only game in town. To expand the line, Federal purchased American Cartridge Company in 1924—at the time-based in Kansas City, MO—and moved production and machinery Minnesota. Rimfire cartridges were soon being sold under the Federal name.
History of Ammunition Innovation
By 1928 Federal’s ability to innovate became apparent. That year it offered loads with non-corrosive primers. Copper-coated .22 bullets followed in 1931 and the following year Federal offered high-velocity loads. In 1937 it brought a new bullet design to market, one aerodynamically tuned to reduce drag and improve accuracy—the company called it “Airlines.”
The concept is foreign to modern shooters, but shotshell were one made in a variety of colors—depending on manufacturer and supply—regardless of size, until 1960. That’s when Federal introduced a safety-enhancing color-code that has become industry standard. In 1973 the company was the first to introduce steel shot. Along the way the company has developed many of the innovations we rely on today, and most recently introduced the high-performance .224 Valkyrie in 2018—with a projectile that maintains supersonic speed past 1,300 yards.
The cutting-edge products coming out of the company’s research and development team may get the headlines, but the forward-thinking approach is standard-operating procedure in every department. Federal Premium’s history of helping non-profit organizations, for example, began in 1934. Despite the Great Depression and the fact that most profitable corporations ignored worthwhile causes, Federal defied the trend and became the first nationwide sponsor of 4-H camps. Since then it has helped the conservation efforts of the National Wild Turkey Federation, National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited, Safari Club International and many others.
Introductions & Changes
Federal didn’t manufacture its first centerfire rifle and handgun cartridges until 1963. The familiar Federal Premium line hit the shelves in 1977, the same year Charles Horn retired. His son, William, took over the helm and spearheaded many of the efforts that kept Federal one of the industry’s foremost leaders.
In 1985 Federal was sold to a group of investors. It later passed through the hands of Blount, Lehman Brothers and finally found a home in defense-industry legend Alliant Techsystems (ATK).
Today it’s part of Vista Outdoor, the ATK sporting group of companies that was spun off into a separate entity in 2015. Better mission focus was one of the reasons for the amicable separation, and the added concentration on the needs of civilian shooters shows in Federal’s current lineup.
Federal Premium HST
Federal is deadly serious about the performance of its self-defense ammunition, and the dedication is on display in its relatively new HST line. The hollow-point bullet is designed to reduce or eliminate clogging as it passes through intermediate barriers, yet reliably expand on impact and retain weight. Overpenetration is minimized while fight-stopping power is retained. Add the nickel case, bullet profile tuned to avoid feeding problems with Federal’s unique primer and it makes for the kind reliable load needed for carry or home defense. Owners of .45 ACP, .40 S&W, 10 mm, .38 Spl. and .380 ACP handguns will want to take a close look at these loads.
Federal Premium Hydra-Shok
Hydra-Shok first hit the market in 1989, and it’s never surrendered its position as one of the premier self-defense cartridges. The unmistakable-looking bullet is a hollow-point, with a center post that aids in reliable expansion and weight retention. It’s available for a variety of handgun chamberings.
Federal Gold Medal Match
Combine Federal’s the near century of cartridge-tuning knowledge with the bullet-making wizardry at Sierra Bullets and you have the MatchKing. If you want to put those calipers to use on targets further than 100 yards—without hours behind a reloading press—look no further.
Federal Premium Sierra GameKing
Hunters need to deliver clean and ethical, one-shot stops, and these loads improve the ability to do so. Loaded with the Sierra Bullets line of soft-point GameKings, they deliver the exterior ballistics required to hit and target and all the expansion needed to fill that tag.
Federal Premium Prairie Storm
Federal was the first company to produce a shotshell designed for a specific hunting pursuit. It was turkey at first, but its Prairie Storm continues the tradition with 2 3/4- and 3-inch loads in different gauges, all tailored for upland bird hunters.
Federal American Eagle
And high-volume shooters aren’t ignored by Federal. Its pocketbook-friendly American Eagle line is available in a variety of different chamberings and loads. Whether your practicing or competing with a handgun or rifle, the odds are good you’ll find an American Eagle product to cover your needs.

Federal Classic Hi-Shok 9mm 115 Grain JHP - 50 Rounds
$22.85Product Type Ammo Manufacturer Federal Condition New Bullet Weight 115 Grain Bullet Type Jacketed Hollow-Point (JHP) Use Type home defense Casing Type Brass Quantity 50 Ammo Caliber 9mm Luger (9x19) Manufacturer SKU 9BP Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 29465088163 Cost Per Round 45.7¢ per round Hi-Shok rounds from Federal are a classic choice for 9mm defense which will function in a wide range of firearms. Before Federal Hydrashoks and HSTs were common names in shooting circles, Hi-Shok pioneered features that are now common in all brands of high quality jacketed hollow-point (JHP) ammunition. JHP rounds are guarded in the rear to reduce lead exposure while their wide head cavities cause expansion after impact in order to create a wider wound cavity and contribute to faster incapacitation in personal defense situations. Hi-Shok JHPs are further enhanced by a pre-segmented jacket which helps the bullet to expand reliably even after low velocity contact out of short barreled pistols.
Hi-Shok cartridges also feature a positive case crimp to the toothed cannelure of the projectile. This prevents bullet setback during repeated chambering which could cause a failure-to-fire or an even more catastrophic failure. The projectiles weigh in at 115 grain and match the recoil impulse and flight characteristics of the most popular bullet profile in the 9x19mm Luger caliber. Hi-Shok rounds were designed to function reliably in pistols that may not feed with typical wide mouth hollow-points. The cartridges are assembled using reloadable brass casings and non-corrosive Boxer primers.

Each shell utilizes a polished head for slick extraction that is attached to a water-resistant plastic hull. The hull has a total length of 2-3/4 inches for near-universal shotgun compatibility as well as a raised and rolled edge at its crimp which assists in rapid reloading.
Inside the shell is a 1-ounce load of #7.5 size shot which is great for medium to long range clay pigeon busting. Hardened lead pellets are less likely to deform during the firing process and therefore keep tighter patterns out to greater distances. The shot rests in the cup of a protective, collapsible wad which reduces felt recoil and expands at the rear to catch greater propellant gases. Federal's clean-burning powder is ignited by a non-corrosive 209 primer that is made in-house for guaranteed dependability.

American Eagle is Federal’s dedicated brand of target shooting ammo. We wouldn’t volunteer to get hit by any 10mm bullet. All the same, the full metal jacket is not designed for terminal expansion, and accordingly punches a ~4” hole into a soft medium instead of a significantly wider one. The 180 grain bullet achieves 1,030 fps muzzle velocity out of a 5” barrel, and reaches 100 yards with ~400 ft lbs of kinetic energy. The bullet has the 10mm’s iconic flat nose profile, which helps to punch a pretty clean hole through a cardboard or paper target.
Order today and you’ll soon take pride in owning true Minnesota-made ammunition. And if you want to put this ammo’s brand new brass cases to work at your reloading press, we’ve got just the component bullets you’ll need for the job! -

Each round is built using a reloadable brass casing mated to a non-corrosive Boxer primer via solid seating and primer sealant; this compound prevents moisture from penetrating through to reach the clean-burning propellant. The casings are also firmly crimped to the toothed cannelure of each bullet to prevent setback and optimize reliability.
The projectile used in this cartridge design is a non-penetrating, 62 grain full metal jacket boat tail (FMJ-BT) bullet that is not attracted to a magnet. The rear curvature of the FMJ-BT shape resists drag and is less susceptible to in-flight shift. This combines with a well-studied 62 grain weight to provide shooters with accurate and predictable ballistic performance. Federal's American Eagle line is intended to be a low-cost plinking solution that doesn't skip out on quality enhancements.

Federal American Eagle 223 Rem 75 Grain TMJ – 500 Rounds
$294.85Product Type Ammo Manufacturer Federal Condition New Bullet Weight 75 Grain Bullet Type Total Metal Jacket (TMJ) Use Type plinking at the range Casing Type Brass Quantity 500 Ammo Caliber 223 Remington Manufacturer SKU AE223T75 Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 50004544625618 Cost Per Round 59¢ per round Quite the handy case of AR ammo to have on hand courtesy of Federal, right here! This 223 Rem cartridge has a 75 grain bullet, which is a bit hefty for its caliber but for good reason: That weight improves its ability to resist the influence of cross and vertical winds as it makes its way far downrange.
This versatile bullet isn’t only suitable for sniping targets, either. Federal gave it a total metal jacket, which unlike an FMJ goes an additional length to cover the bullet’s base as well. That added protection prevents the ignition process from aerosolizing the lead inside the bullet, reducing the risk to your health.
An American Eagle round represents outstanding value. In addition to its nifty projectile, this cartridge gives you its high quality and reloadable brass casing, a clean burning propellant charge, and a primer that’s so sensitive it cries at the endings of romantic comedies. -

It’s nice and dense, and almost cheap as dirt to pull out of the earth’s generous crust. But lead has a major shortcoming working against it – it is toxic. If you’re taking an eco-friendly approach to upland game hunting (or the government has demanded you take an eco-friendly approach), Federal’s Upland Steel shotshells will take good care of you out there!
Federal loads this 12 Gauge shell with a normal weight 1-1/8 ounce column of #7.5 shot. Federal’s steel pellets are every bit as round and consistently sized as their regular lead shot, so they still boast an efficient pattern several dozen yards out. This shell makes up for low density steel with a faster than usual 1,400 fps muzzle velocity. Expect more recoil – as well as plenty of killing power!
This shell’s wad is designed to even further improve its pattern efficiency. Its primer and powder are both clean-burning, and once they have burned you can reload the Minnesotan master’s high-quality hull. -

You’ve obviously got both, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want proper good ammo while you’re showing people how things are done. Federal’s Top Gun Sporting label ammunition is specifically developed for sporting clays – “golf with a shotgun,” as it is known, because playing actual golf with a shotgun would be difficult and highly illegal – but it’s a great selection for skeet, trap, and even nailing varmints, too!
This shell is loaded with half an ounce of Federal’s deformation resistant and highly spherical #7.5 lead shot. Striking moving targets in midair is extremely difficult, but this shell helps to even the odds with its lightning-fast 1,330 fps muzzle velocity. You’ll benefit from shorter lead times!
Federal’s wad design and powder formula are both optimized to reduce felt recoil. The 410 is hardly a shell that’s going to knock you out of your sneakers to begin with, but you’ll appreciate how well this gentle shell prevents fatigue. The great Minnesotan maker’s primer doesn’t let you down in the middle of a bout, and their 2-1/2” hull makes a great reloading component once you have freed it of its contents. -

Its bullet is a TMJ -- no, not the painful jaw disorder, but a total metal jacket! Such a jacket prevents ignition from evaporating the bullet’s core, so if you’re taking your AR-15 indoors this round’s a good investment in your lungs’ health. The bullet is also heavy for its caliber, which means if you shoot long distance you’ll enjoy shots that better resist wind drift as well. Good for a rainy day, and good for a nice day too!
Federal Eagle ammo is massively popular among enthusiasts who like to get as much value for their hard earned money as they’re able to. Federal knows brass inside and out, so they’ve precision formed these rounds’ casings to be uniform, sturdy, and perfectly reloadable. These rounds’ consistent primers are both sensitive and non-corrosive, which will make shooting satisfying without taking a big toll on your rifle’s integrity. -

The Hi-Shok JHP bullet design is shaped for optimum interface with any style of feed ramp and possesses a very wide cavity surrounded by light serrations. The bullet features a total metal jacket -- because even its base is enclosed by its jacket, you’ll produce substantially fewer lead fumes when you fire it. That makes it perfect for use in poorly ventilated indoor ranges, or for high volume shooters who know they’d do well to limit their lungs’ exposure to toxic gasses. This bullet’s jacket further prevents rapid lead fouling in a rifle’s bore, preserving the very accuracy that the 224 Valkyrie cartridge is renowned for.
This round also offers a factory fresh brass casing which is ideal for handloading, a non-corrosive primer which is reliable enough to guarantee a shot with every trigger pull, and clean burning propellant which will spare your bore and action from becoming encrusted with caustic residues. Its agreeable price and number of features make this cartridge a must for range training, and with 200 of them to go through you’ll be quite content the next time you venture to the range or woods. -

We call them “our favorite dudes,” because we get to sell them Federal Premium Top Gun by the case.
That’s right! One of the Midwest’s greatest ammunition manufacturers designed this 410 shell specifically for the great sport of sporting clays. Don’t fret if you want to shoot trap or skeet – and maybe take a crack or two at small game in between range days. This handy shell does it all (with obvious exceptions for medium game and personal protection).
This 2-1/2” long shell’s 1/2 ounce payload of #8 shot equals 205 pellets total. Not as much as you’d get out of a 12 or a 20, but still plenty effective thanks to the hard lead shot pellets’ ability to stay round under pressure, pattern efficiently, and put more holes through the target. The shell’s chipper 1,330 fps muzzle velocity is super helpful, as it provides a relatively flat trajectory, short lead time, and hard punch on impact.
Shoot it in your Judge or Governor! -

Heck, even if you own an AR-15 and have no intention of firing it anytime soon, you’d do right to have a few boxes of Federal’s American Eagle label 223 Rem ammo ready to go. This is one of America’s favorite solutions for target practice!
This 223 cartridge is loaded to standard M193 specifications: 55 grain FMJ bullet, 3,240 fps muzzle velocity. Federal’s FMJ additionally features a boat tail – a tapering base that mitigates in-flight drag to increase the amount of velocity the bullet can retain downrange. With its ballistic coefficient of 0.269, a bullet like this easily flies faster than 1,900 fps when it passes 400 yards!
This is military-grade ammo, but it was specifically produced for the civilian market. You will notice that its brass cases are visibly annealed. The discoloration is purely cosmetic, and indicates that the brass was heat-treated so it can expand to seal the chamber more efficiently and return to its original dimensions following ignition. Federal’s Boxer primers and propellant are both clean-burning and intensely reliable. Stock up now – ammo like this goes fast! -

In addition to providing expansion, the hollow point projectile has a semi-wadcutter shape that results in nice, clean holes in paper targets.
This ammunition is loaded in Anoka, Minnesota using non-corrosive Boxer primers and reloadable brass cases. Like all .38 Super loads, it is designated +P but can be fired in any handgun chambered for this particular cartridge.

Federal American Eagle 223 Rem 62 Grain FMJ-BT – 20 Rounds
$15.85Product Type Ammo Manufacturer Federal Condition New Bullet Weight 62 Grain Bullet Type Full Metal Jacket Boat Tail (FMJ-BT) Use Type plinking at the range Casing Type Brass Quantity 20 Ammo Caliber 223 Remington Manufacturer SKU AE223N Primer Type Boxer Magnetic No UPC Barcode 29465093488 Cost Per Round 79.2¢ per round These .223 Remington rounds from Federal's American Eagle line represent some of the highest quality available before stepping into the premium price pool. Each cartridge is assembled using a reloadable brass casing fitted with a non-corrosive Boxer primer and complimented by primer pocket sealant which guards against moisture.
The rounds are topped by 62 grain full metal jacket projectiles with boat tails (FMJ-BT) which reduce in-flight drag for increased range and precision. 62 grains is a common weight for the caliber, especially in its 5.56mm NATO configuration, and is amply supported by endless amounts of ballistic software, sight sets, and proven zeroing methods. In addition, each casing is crimped to each bullets' toothed cannelure in order to prevent projectile setback which can spoil accuracy at best and induce a misfire or malfunction at worst.
