Black Powder (Muzzleloader)
Black powder, also known simply as gunpowder, is the propellant used for muzzleloaders today. From its invention in China in the Middle Ages up to the late 19th century, it was the only firearm propellant available.
Gunpowder is composed of saltpeter (potassium nitrate), sulfur, and charcoal. In comparison to smokeless powder, it is much slower burning and easier to ignite.
Substitutes for black powder such as Pyrodex or Triple Seven can also be used in muzzleloaders. These substitutes are less volatile and easier to transport safely than black powder and produce less fouling, making them a popular alternative to the traditional product.
