But from a historical perspective, it\u2019s often hard to differentiate between fact and myth. There are more than a few entertaining films\u2014<i>JFK<\/i> and <i>The Untouchables<\/i> come to mind quickly\u2014that are fun to watch but bear only a slight resemblance to the historical reality that inspired them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">So, what about two movies that are arguably the greatest sniper films ever made: <i>Enemy at the Gates<\/i> and <i>American Sniper<\/i>? Is there more than just a grain of truth in them? Or has Hollywood followed a long tradition of not letting the facts get in the way of a good story?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Here\u2019s a look at some five of history\u2019s greatest duels. All of them are factual but with at least a sprinkling of fiction to add flavor. The first of these occurred at the Battle of Stalingrad, one of the most brutal confrontations of World War II.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Vassili Zaytsev vs. Major Erwin K\u00f6nig (<i>Enemy at the Gates<\/i>)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_954\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-954\" class=\"wp-image-954 size-full\" title=\"greatest sniper duels Vassili Zaytsev vs Major Erwin K\u00f6nig\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V1.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of greatest sniper duels Vassili Zaytsev vs Major Erwin K\u00f6nig\" width=\"1024\" height=\"869\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V1-300x255.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V1-768x652.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V1-790x670.jpg 790w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-954\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Soviet sniper\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Vassili Zaytsev was portrayed by actor Jude Law in the film <em>Enemy At The Gates<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The Battle for Stalingrad pitted the invading German army against Soviet soldiers defending their homeland. Soviet sniper Vassili Zaytsev, who already had over 200 confirmed kills, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">was wreaking havoc and destroying morale among the Nazis. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">The Germans also had their own super-sniper, Major Erwin K<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00f6<\/span><span class=\"s1\">nig, whom they sent to Stalingrad to kill Zaitsev.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\">For a week the two marksmen played a deadly cat-and-mouse game until <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Zaytsev caught a glimpse of light under a piece of metal. When another Soviet soldier baited K\u00f6nig by lifting a helmet on a stick, the German sniper fired and exposed his position. When K\u00f6nig peeked from beneath the metal to see if he had killed his target, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/rifle\/7.62x54r-ammo\">Zaytsev shot him<\/a> in the head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Zaytsev mentioned K\u00f6nig in his memoir,\u00a0<i>Notes of a Sniper, <\/i>as does\u00a0William Craig in his 1973 non-fiction book\u00a0<i>Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad.<\/i> Yet, there are no records in the archives to indicate that a Major Erwin K\u00f6nig ever fought for the Germans in World War II.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Some believe that the sniper\u2019s real name was Heinz Thorvald. While others surmise that the German military might have destroyed records of K\u00f6nig. Covering up his death at the hands of a \u201csubhuman\u201d Russian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">To add some credibility to the existence of K\u00f6nig, however, during a visit to Berlin after the war, Zaytsev was allegedly confronted by a woman who claimed she was K\u00f6nig&#8217;s daughter. Carlos Hathcock\u00a0never had a movie made about his life, but he fought a few sniper battles during his two tours in Vietnam. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">For the record, Hathcock had 93 confirmed kills during his service in Vietnam.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Each of these was confirmed by an officer, but there were many others at which no officer was present, so the unofficial count is more like between 300 and 400 enemies killed, according to Hathcock\u2019s estimates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s little wonder that the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) had a bounty of $30,000 on his head, and why one NVA sniper after another was sent to kill him. One of those, a sniper named \u201cCobra,\u201d was looking for the cash prize. He got more than he had bargained for. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Hathcock picked up the sniper\u2019s trail and began hunting him. While following the sniper, Hathcock tripped over a tree and gave away his position. The NVA sniper shot but missed Hathcock and hit his partner\u2019s canteen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">As the men maneuvered against each other, the gunnery sergeant spotted a glint in the brush and fired. Just as Hathcock had suspected, the glint was light reflecting from the sniper\u2019s scope.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/rifle\/30-06-ammo\">Hathcock\u2019s shot<\/a> had traveled through the enemy\u2019s scope\u00a0and into his eye!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>Simo H<strong>\u00e4<\/strong>yh<strong>\u00e4<\/strong> vs. Soviet Sniper Squad<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_959\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-959\" class=\"wp-image-959 size-full\" title=\"History's Greatest Sniper Duels Simo H\u00e4yh\u00e4 vs. Soviet Sniper Squad\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V3.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of History's Greatest Sniper Duels Simo H\u00e4yh\u00e4 vs. Soviet Sniper Squad\" width=\"1024\" height=\"869\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V3.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V3-300x255.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V3-768x652.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V3-790x670.jpg 790w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-959\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Finnish sniper\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Simo H\u00e4yh\u00e4 was nicknamed &#8220;White Death&#8221; by the Red Army.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">Simo H\u00e4yh\u00e4 was likely the greatest sniper of all time. As the Soviet Union was invading Finland starting in November of 1939, Finnish sniper H\u00e4yh\u00e4 began picking off Russian soldiers. He had a total of over 542 kills by the time the invasion ended just four months later&#8211;all of these with a bolt-action M\/28 rifle without a scope!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to those 542 confirmed kills, he is also credited with another two hundred or so kills with a Suomi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/handgun\/9mm-ammo#wolf-9mm-luger-115-grain-mil-classics-fmj-50-rounds\">9mm machine gun<\/a>, which brings his total to well over 700 kills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">After H\u00e4yh\u00e4 took down twenty-five Soviet soldiers in a single day, the Russians had had enough. They sent their own snipers to try to get rid of their nemesis. Although he got the best of the snipers sent against him, H\u00e4yh\u00e4 was eventually shot in the jaw with an exploding bullet. His fellow soldiers took him off the battlefield, one of them claiming \u201chalf his head was missing.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s1\">Remarkably, Simo H\u00e4yh\u00e4 survived his wounds. A feminist long before the term came into fashion, Pavlichenko is credited with killing at least 309 Nazis, 36 of whom had been enemy snipers. And while rumors persist that Pavlichenko was mostly a propaganda myth, she had been wounded four times by 1942 and had become a menace to<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> German soldiers on the Eastern front. The Germans even resorted to addressing her over their loudspeakers. Offering her comfort and candy to switch sides and join their ranks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p11\"><span class=\"s1\">Suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder, Pavlichenko became a spokesperson for the war effort in Europe. She toured the United States with first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, another strong, no-nonsense woman, with whom she would forge a lifetime bond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p11\"><span class=\"s1\">Lyudmila Pavlichenko\u2019s wounds never healed completely, and she died in her son\u2019s arms at the age of 58.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Because the USSR did not have adequate palliative care programs for its veterans, her death was a painful one. According to Pavlichenko\u2019s daughter-in-law, the former sniper swore like a sailor, said goodbye to her son, and passed away. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p12\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Chris Kyle vs. Iraqi Sniper Mustafa (<i>American Sniper<\/i>)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_965\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-965\" class=\"wp-image-965 size-full\" title=\"History's Greatest Sniper Duels Chris Kyle vs Iraqi Sniper Mustafa\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V5.jpg\" alt=\"photo of History's Greatest Sniper Duels Chris Kyle vs Iraqi Sniper Mustafa\" width=\"1024\" height=\"869\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V5.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V5-300x255.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V5-768x652.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Wideners-Sniper-Duels-V5-790x670.jpg 790w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-965\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clint Eastwood directed the film <em>American Sniper<\/em> based on Chris Kyle&#8217;s life story.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The antagonist in the 2014 Hollywood blockbuster\u00a0<i>American Sniper<\/i>\u00a0is an Arab sniper known as \u201cMustafa.\u201d He kills the friend of US SEAL sniper Chris Kyle (played by Bradley Cooper), and he picks off US troops one after another. Kyle feels he can\u2019t leave his US comrades until he kills Mustafa. It\u2019s a wonderful movie with a riveting plot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p13\"><span class=\"s2\">But how much of this movie is historically accurate? Well, Chris Kyle is the real deal, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/rifle\/300-winchester-magnum-ammo\">160 confirmed kills<\/a>, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">one Silver Star, and four Bronze Stars in four tours of duty during the Iraq War. Mustafa, on the other hand, is a shadowy figure at best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Kyle writes little about Mustafa in his memoir. Saying only that \u201cFrom the reports we heard, Mustafa was an Olympics marksman who was using his skills against Americans and Iraqi police and soldiers. Several videos had been made and posted, boasting of his ability. I never saw him, but other snipers later killed an Iraqi sniper we think was him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Kyle survived his exploits in Iraq, <\/span><span class=\"s6\">only to be shot and killed on a gun range by a 25-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran who suffered from <\/span><span class=\"s1\">schizophrenia<\/span><span class=\"s6\"> and <\/span><span class=\"s1\">post-traumatic stress disorder.
