The statesman, philosopher, diplomat, inventor, architect, and author left an enduring mark on American democracy through his extensive contributions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jefferson&#8217;s life incorporated his prominent role in the American Revolution and his visionary presidency as the third U.S. President, while showcasing both intellectual depth and multiple contradictions that continue to shape American history.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 Thomas Jefferson, 1800 <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>Early Life and Education<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monticello.org\/research-education\/thomas-jefferson-encyclopedia\/shadwell\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shadwell, Virginia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, into a wealthy plantation family. He was the third of ten children born to Peter Jefferson, a surveyor and planter, and Jane Randolph Jefferson, a member of one of Virginia&#8217;s most prominent families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his early years, Jefferson showed a keen intellect and love for learning. He learned Latin, Greek, and French and later attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. It was there that Enlightenment ideals influenced him as he studied law under the prominent jurist George Wythe. He served in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopediavirginia.org\/entries\/house-of-burgesses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginia House of Burgesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while implementing two key reforms, which included religious freedom and the elimination of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/primogeniture\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primogeniture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/connecticuthistory.org\/roger-sherman-revolutionary-and-dedicated-public-servant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roger Sherman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/history.nycourts.gov\/figure\/robert-r-livingston\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Livingston<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Jefferson, who was the primary author, were all members of the committee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/founding-docs\/declaration-transcript\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Declaration of Independence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was ratified on July 4, 1776, and contained the colonists&#8217; grievances against <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_III\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">King George III<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as the principles of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Enlightenment-European-history\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enlightenment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Jefferson famously stated, &#8220;We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jefferson&#8217;s voice dominates the document even though others edited it. His statements laid the theoretical groundwork for American democracy and declared America&#8217;s independence from Britain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Thomas Jefferson\u2019s Service in the Continental Congress and State Government<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the signing of the Declaration, Jefferson carried on with his political career. He pushed for changes in land ownership, education, and religion while serving in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/virginiageneralassembly.gov\/hm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Virginia House of Delegates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 1776 to 1779.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a challenging period of the war, he was elected Governor of Virginia in 1779. Jefferson&#8217;s leadership came under fire after he left Monticello before an approaching British cavalry raid, and British forces invaded the state. Even though he was later found not guilty, the incident briefly tarnished his reputation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1783, Jefferson rejoined <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/history.state.gov\/milestones\/1776-1783\/continental-congress\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Continental Congress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where he promoted public education and westward migration. He wrote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/founders.archives.gov\/documents\/Jefferson\/01-06-02-0420-0006\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 1784 Ordinance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which served as the foundation for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/milestone-documents\/northwest-ordinance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Northwest Ordinance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, subsequently, the idea of territories becoming states.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Thomas Jefferson\u2019s Diplomatic Service in France<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jefferson succeeded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/benjaminfranklin.yale.edu\/about-us\/about-benjamin-franklin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benjamin Franklin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as America&#8217;s top diplomat in Paris in 1784 when he was named U.S. minister to France. He lived in France until 1789, during which time he observed the early phases of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/French-Revolution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the French Revolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jefferson improved U.S.-French ties while in Europe and learned more about European political and economic thought. Although he respected the French Enlightenment, he was concerned about the increasing violence of the Revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jefferson&#8217;s views on republicanism and individual liberty were strengthened by his time spent in France. He came back to the United States as the Constitution&#8217;s new federal government took shape.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State and the Birth of Political Factions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/george-washington\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President George Washington<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> named Jefferson the first Secretary of State in 1790. Political differences started to solidify during this time, particularly between Jefferson and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/about\/history\/prior-secretaries\/alexander-hamilton-1789-1795\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jefferson supported a strong state government, an economy centered on agriculture, and a literal reading of the Constitution. Hamilton favored a national banking system and a powerful central government. The first American political parties, the Federalists (led by Hamilton) and Jeffersonian Republicans (later Democratic-Republicans), were formed as a result of these ideological disagreements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Particularly because of the neutrality declaration during the French Revolutionary Wars and the assumption of state debts, Jefferson became increasingly uneasy in Washington&#8217;s cabinet. In 1793, he resigned and withdrew to Monticello to concentrate on his personal and agricultural affairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Vice Presidency under John Adams (1797\u20131801)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite political tensions, Jefferson made a comeback to national politics in 1796 and ran for president. Despite losing to John Adams, he was chosen as the runner-up for vice president under the electoral laws in effect at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/billofrightsinstitute.org\/primary-sources\/virginia-and-kentucky-resolutions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kentucky Resolutions (1798)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of Jefferson&#8217;s many writings during his time as vice president, argued that states had the power to overturn unconstitutional federal laws. After 36 ballots, the House of Representatives decided in Jefferson&#8217;s favor, partly because of Hamilton&#8217;s grudging support, after Jefferson and Aaron Burr tied in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/electoral-college\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Electoral College<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A historic event, Jefferson&#8217;s peaceful assumption of control showed that power could be passed in the U.S. without bloodshed or unrest, which was uncommon at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Key Achievements<\/span><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louisiana_Purchase\"><b>Louisiana Purchase (1803)<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By paying $15 million to France for the Louisiana Territory, Jefferson doubled the size of the United States. Madison (1803)<\/b><\/a><b>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it wasn&#8217;t something Jefferson directly initiated, this Supreme Court case, brought about during his presidency, established judicial review, thereby bolstering the judiciary&#8217;s authority and influencing American constitutional law.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Reduction of Federal Government:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In keeping with his ideals, Jefferson lowered military expenditures and eliminated internal taxes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>Thomas Jefferson\u2019s Challenges and Controversies<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Embargo Act of 1807<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jefferson signed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monticello.org\/research-education\/thomas-jefferson-encyclopedia\/embargo-1807\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embargo Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which banned all American exports, in an effort to persuade Britain and France to uphold American neutrality during <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Napoleonic-Wars\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Napoleonic Wars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The U.S. economy was severely damaged by the act, particularly in port cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later Years and Legacy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After leaving office in 1809, Jefferson retired to Monticello. A visionary who firmly believed in the promise of the American experiment, he was also a champion of liberty who owned slaves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His contributions influenced the political, intellectual, and territorial development of the United States.
