Still, he possessed a remarkable capacity to endure the severe discomfort and immobility required to lie concealed in the jungle. He maintained his position, staying vigilant for any sign of the enemy and enduring the attention of insects and snakes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By his account, his resting heart rate was just 50 beats a minute, and he would use the pumping of his heart and the rise and fall of his breath to time his shots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It was the ultimate hunting trip,\u201d he told the\u202f<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los Angeles Times <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">years later. \u201cA man hunting another man who was hunting me. These included conventions and public engagements, and he also participated in sniper shooting competitions nationally. He became the face and voice of Strider Knives, endorsing a specially designed knife bearing his signature. It\u2019s a modified version of the Remington 40X with bolt-action mechanics chambered for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/rifle\/308-ammo#winchester-7-62x51-149-grain-fmj-m80-500-rounds-29747\">7.62&#215;51 mm NATO<\/a>. Introduced in 1966, the rifle quickly became the standard issue for Marine snipers. Mawhinney&#8217;s M40, fitted with a Redfield 3-9X Accu-Range scope, afforded him exceptional accuracy during combat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one particularly fierce skirmish, Mawhinney opted to leave behind his sniper rifle and advanced with an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wideners.com\/blog\/m14-vs-m1-garand\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M14 semiautomatic rifle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
